If you’re looking for the best Valletta hotels, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve selected a selection of the best-reviewed hotels in Valletta, Malta, for different budgets, all based on personal experience and local knowledge.
Because Malta’s capital city is in popular demand as a travel destination, expect to pay well for a hotel in Valletta, especially compared to the average rates for some of the best hotels in Malta.
Contrary to what you might expect from the capital, Valletta doesn’t offer an awful lot of choices in terms of traditional hotels, but you’ll find plenty of (more upscale) boutique hotels within the city walls. Those hotels provide comfortable accommodation in stylishly (and respectfully) renovated old palaces in the city’s historic streets.
If you’re on a budget, you can find a few guesthouses and self-catering apartments as well for a reasonable price, which I’ve also included in this article.
Let’s kick off with my selection of boutique hotels in Valletta.
Boutique hotels aren’t exactly cheap, but you can definitely find value deals among some of the best luxury hotels in town. Expect to pay a minimum of between €125-175 per night in the high season (June – September), while low season rates rarely fall below €100. Although the “sun and sea” resorts will see far less demand in the low season, Valletta is a popular destination pretty much all year round, offering many sites to visit and see.
My best tip: Book well in advance to get the best deals and prices (and availability in the first place).
If you have the budget, I’d highly recommend having a look at one of the hotels listed below. It’s with good reason that they receive glowing reviews: They do offer high-quality stays that can ultimately enhance your stay in historic Valletta. For family stays, however, you’ll need to look for alternatives in terms of traditional hotels in Valletta (which I’ve listed further down below in this article).
Ranked in no particular order, these are the best hotels that exist within the bastion walls of the capital.
Casa Ellul is probably the epitome of a luxury stay in Valletta, and although it could be classified as a boutique hotel, it goes well beyond the standard of boutique accommodation available.
With luxurious interiors and amenities like private terraces with a jacuzzi, it is undoubtedly one of the best hotels in Valletta, Malta. All in all, this is a no-brainer if cost isn’t a concern.
Overlooking the Grand Harbour is none other than one of the most popular luxury hotels in historic Valletta; Iniala Harbour House. In just a few words, it truly encapsulates everything you’d want in a luxurious stay when visiting Valletta.
23 bespoke rooms, complete with eclectic décor and meticulous wellness facilities, have been expertly designed for you to immerse yourself in an experience that will most certainly exceed your expectations.
Alongside the prestigious rooms, you are also welcome to indulge in an award-winning dining experience at the hotel’s restaurant, Ion the Harbour. The tasting menu is simply exquisite!
Located right in the heart of Republic Street, The Melior Boutique Hotel is one of the best hotels in Valletta and truly “your key to the city.
All rooms have a contemporary touch and have been expertly finished with all the amenities needed for you to enjoy a memorable stay in central Valletta. To enrich your stay, you also have the opportunity to book in-room spa treatments.
Top-notch customer service is offered, breakfast options are great and is good value for money.
If you’re looking for good value in the luxury segment, Palazzo Rosaria Boutique Hotel is a great option.
Ideally located near main attractions such as the National Museum of Archaeology, St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta’s main square, the Upper Barrakka Gardens, and the National War Museum, this boutique hotel features 21 rooms that have been beautifully renovated to perfection.
With a mix of classical and modern interiors, the rooms and facilities are of a high standard, while rates are modest compared to similar hotels in the area. Although a swimming pool isn’t available, a private jacuzzi is available when opting for the luxurious Executive Suite.
In short, if you want to spend some time getting lost in the Capital’s narrow streets and exploring all that it has to offer, this is one of the best hotels in Valletta.
Note: This hotel is located in the very centre of the city, so it’s a great idea to base yourself there, but there are several bars and cafes in and around the hotel. That means it’s not the quietest place to stay!
Time and time again, Palazzo Ignazio has been commended for offering a “quintessentially Maltese experience”.
Picture this; the hotel is located right in the Valletta City Centre, just steps away from major cultural landmarks, bars, cafes, restaurants and museums.
Ranging from superior to double rooms and luxurious suites, the hotel staff at Palazzo Ignazio strives to offer a memorable experience to all those who book a stay. Common amenities include tea and coffee-making facilities, bed linen and towels, private ensuite bathrooms, free WIFI, a Mini-Bar, Air-Conditioning, and a flat-screen TV.
If your budget allows you to opt for the suites, you will certainly not be disappointed. Depending on the one you choose, you can soak up the sun on the roof terrace, enjoy spectacular city and sea views, and even unwind in the private jacuzzi.
Highly recommended!
19 Rooms Hotel Valletta Malta offers something a little different: Comfort paired with style and a unique modern character.
With funky and cool interiors, this is a great option for young couples looking to make Valletta their base of stay.
19 Rooms is fairly new in town but very much a rising star, with reasonable rates to boot for good value.
Domus Zamittello is another boutique option with classical interiors to consider.
Relatively new and already well-reviewed, this is an impressive building that’s located in Valletta’s city centre: Republic Street.
Very classy and with beautiful original architecture, this is a highly impressive offer at a reasonable price, considering the high standard and perfect location.
One of the lesser-known options in this list, The Saint John, provides more modernly decorated suites in a beautifully restored building in a popular part of town: Merchants’ Street.
Excellent standards upheld by an international chain of hotels (AX).
The Cumberland Hotel is a more modern boutique hotel in Valletta that offers a minimalist and elegant interior.
A truly luxurious option close to the St. John’s Co-Cathedral in the city centre, you get all the amenities expected and large, comfortable rooms with attentive service to match.
No frills, very cool and close to pretty much everything in town.
A fairly new addition among Valletta boutique hotels, Palazzo Paolina, has a unique identity, with classically designed interiors and a distinct baroque design as you enter the reception area.
It’s a small hotel with comfortable, well-furnished rooms with amenities to match the price, while the staff are attentive and helpful.
Tip: They have a single penthouse suite with a jacuzzi and views of Grand Harbour. Early booking is recommended!
Somewhat of a cross between a traditional hotel and boutique accommodation, Palazzo Consiglia is unique.
With a bit of a retro feel, yet modernly furnished and with high-quality amenities, it’s something a little bit special.
Unsurprisingly, their rates aren’t the lowest you’ll find, but you get the kind of stay in Valletta that’s hard to find pretty much anywhere.
With unique interiors and spacious and luxuriously designed and furnished rooms, SU29 Boutique Hotel is a little different from most smaller hotels in Valletta.
Found in one of the best areas to stay within the capital, close to the Grand Harbour side of town.
With attention to detail and top-notch service, this is one of the best choices around if the price isn’t an issue.
Palais Le Brun is a very exclusive property and a relatively recent addition to the selection of boutique hotels in Valletta.
You’ll be staying in an old 16th-century Baroque palace with all the modern amenities you’d expect from a high-quality stay.
With beautifully decorated interiors and top-level comfort, this is a great option for a comfortable stay just off the city centre of Valletta.
Set in a restored 17th-century palazzo in one of the nicer parts to stay in Valletta, 66 Saint Paul’s is a great hotel to consider.
This boutique hotel’s interior is a little special, blending the classical elements of the building with modern touches.
It’s a well-designed luxury hotel with all the amenities and comfort you’d expect, including a rooftop pool with a sundeck and views.
If you’re into classical interior design, then Valletta Lucente could be the right choice for you.
Another boutique hotel option in the heart of town, the spacious rooms have a classy classical feel and are part of a beautifully restored old palace.
A fairly new addition in Valletta, but collecting stellar reviews already.
Ever dreamed of staying in a 16th Century Palace? Welcome to Casa Rocca Piccola; a palace once built by one of the Knights—Don Pietro La Rocca and is now the ancestral home of the 9th Marquis de Piro and his family.
Although not strictly a boutique hotel, it certainly is worthy of a stay. Whilst the Palace is one of the city’s popular museums, 5 bedrooms have been beautifully restored and equipped with antique furnishings to provide accommodation for locals and tourists who are interested in booking an extra special stay in a great central location.
In a few words, Casa Rocca Piccola B&B is truly a hidden gem. Highly recommended!
If you’re not too fussed with boutique interiors and just want a luxury hotel with all the amenities you can think of, have a look at these 5-star hotel options which you can find in and around Valletta.
The Phoenicia Hotel has undergone a major refurbishment over the past couple of years and is located just outside Valletta. It is one of the most popular hotels in the area and one of the best hotels in Malta right now.
It sits right on the edge of the large square in front of Valletta’s City Gate and is perfectly located for sightseeing in the city and surrounding areas. With luxuriously furnished rooms and all the amenities and services that you’d expect from a 5-star hotel, this is a top choice.
Located just outside of Valletta, close to the harbour, Hotel Grand Excelsior Malta offers 5-star accommodation with a variety of suites and harbour views.
The hotel perhaps doesn’t have as many glowing reviews as its competitors, yet it’s still a good option to consider at the right price.
Rosselli – AX Privilege is one of the most luxurious and popular hotels in Valletta and fully earns its 5-star rating.
The hotel is situated in a 17th-century building along Merchants Street, in one of the nicest parts of the capital.
The interiors are tastefully decorated, and the level of comfort is of the highest level. Without a doubt, one of the best hotel choices money can buy right now.
The Gomerino Hotel is fairly new to Valletta but has quickly made a great impression with its first visitors.
Located on one of the main roads of the city, this hotel makes for a comfortable stay with a lot of attention to detail. That goes for the room interiors but also the staff, who attend to your every need diligently.
A small rooftop pool and terrace offer fantastic views and a great environment to relax after a day of exploring the city.
One important note: Not all rooms are equal. Some have no windows and that doesn’t make for a great experience. Indicate your preference at the booking stage to avoid disappointment.
Located in a quiet street towards the back of Valletta, The Barrister Hotel is a lovely little gem.
A fairly new addition in the area, this hotel gets the details right, from the attentive staff to the in-room amenities and the quality buffet breakfast.
You really can’t beat the excellent location either: pretty much near most of the important sights and with plenty of good restaurants around in the area.
Go for the superior room if available and if your budget stretches.
If you’re looking for more budget-friendly options, these are a few 3- and 4-star Valletta hotel options to consider that provide good value for money:
Located right in the heart of the legendary Strait Street, The Embassy Valletta Hotel prides itself on giving you the proper Valletta experience.
In short, you are treated to a proper 4-star experience. The rooms range from Deluxe and Superior Experiences to Suites, complete with a hot tub and unique views of the city.
As for the facilities, the Embassy Valletta Hotel has a rooftop deck pool, fitness and therapy rooms, a hair salon, a courtyard as well as the famous Embassy Cinema.
Given its excellent location, you’re never too far away from all the charming restaurants and bars that make Strait Street so vibrant. What’s more, you’re within walking distance of St John’s Cathedral, St George’s Square, The President’s Palace, The Manoel Theatre and Republic Street.
The Osborne Hotel is one of the few more modest hotels around within the capital and despite the modest 3-star rating, the rooms are comfortable, the staff is helpful and the location is very good.
The rates aren’t always what you’d expect, however, so unless you book well in advance you might find the rooms on the high side in terms of price. You do pay a premium for the location smack bang in the centre of the city.
Tano’s Boutique Guesthouse is more of a B&B guesthouse than a hotel but with a boutique character and level of comfort.
At reasonable rates considering the location in the centre of Valletta, you get spacious rooms, a good breakfast and attentive service.
The great reviews don’t lie.
A fairly new addition among boutique hotels in Valletta, Paulos Valletta has a unique identity, with classically designed interiors and a distinct baroque design as you enter the reception area.
It’s a small hotel with comfortable, well-furnished rooms with amenities to match the rates, while the staff are attentive and helpful.
Budget travellers will find it hard to find a hotel in Valletta on a low budget, simply because of the high demand in the area. To add to the difficulty in finding a good quality stay at budget prices is the fact that the few options available require you to book well in advance.
During the more popular times of the year, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a hotel for less than €100 / £86 per night for a hotel in Valletta.
Book well in advance and you can find a couple of really nice and comfortable rooms, sometimes even whole apartments in the heart of the city for between €60 and €80 per night, per couple.
If that rate is still over budget, you can also consider:
The Grand Harbour Hotel is an icon among hotels in Valletta. Don’t be fooled by its two-star rating: There’s a lot more to this hotel that makes for a pleasant stay in the capital.
In fact, it’s one of the most popular choices if you’re looking for budget hotels, with guests enjoying well-furnished rooms, well-reviewed amenities and splendid views of Grand Harbour (if you go for a sea view room).
Location-wise, you’ll be staying close to the Upper Barrakka, and in one of the nicest parts of Valletta, generally speaking.
Room availability is limited and the demand is high, so don’t hesitate to book!
