Best luxury hotel for…

InterContinental Malta

Location: St. Julian’s

InterContinental Malta

Location: St. Julian’s

Hotel impression

  • Overall: All the luxury you’d expect from a 5-star hotel, but not the best location.
  • Standout strengths: Great staff and high standard of service, infinity pool on rooftop
  • Location: In the centre of busy nightlife at an area referred to as Paceville.

Things to consider

  • Location is weak point: Busy and nothing noteworthy around
  • Level of maintenance disappointing at times
  • Artificial beach nearby (with private section for hotel): Crowded and not the cleanest.

Hilton Malta

Location: St. Julian’s

Hilton Malta

Location: St. Julian’s

Hotel impression

  • Overall: Often referred to as “the best hotel in Malta”
  • Standout strengths: Luxury inside and out, professional and friendly staff
  • Location: On the edge of nightlife centre and quieter part of town with good choice of restaurants.

Things to consider

  • Located in a busier part of Malta
  • Great for leisure, not the best for a more active holiday

The Westin Dragonara Resort

Location: St. Julian’s

The Westin Dragonara Resort

Location: St. Julian’s

Hotel impression

  • Overall: Been around for a while but maintains a very high standard. Personal favourite.
  • Standout strengths: Luxury inside and out, professional and friendly staff
  • Location: On the edge of nightlife centre and quieter part of town with good choice of restaurants.

Things to consider

  • Attention to detail lacking occasionally.
  • Great for leisure, not best location for exploring places beyond St. Julian’s.
  • Nice sea views can be had but best views are from the 7th and 8th floors.

The Palace

Location: Sliema

The Palace

Location: Sliema

Hotel impression

  • Overall: Unexpected 5-star quality in an otherwise regular tourist resort, offering good value.
  • Standout strengths: Stylish interiors, friendly and helpful staff
  • Location: In the heart of Sliema – the part that hasn’t been taken over by skyscrapers: A quieter part of town with stately houses and streets full of character. Easy to reach public transport and ferries.

Things to consider

  • Not quite top notch standard for a 5-star hotel. Misses the mark on a few details. Nevertheless, good value can be had and comfortable stays can be had and it’s a great choice if you’re looking for luxury in Sliema.
  • Reviews suggest maintenance are slow to act.

Grand Hotel Excelsior

Location: Valletta

Grand Hotel Excelsior

Location: Valletta

Hotel impression

  • Overall: Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta is a gGood 5-star hotel set in a unique location with a high level of comfort and good facilities.
  • Standout strengths: Location, facilities, staff
  • Location: Along the shores of Valletta’s Grand Harbour, a 5-min walk away from City Gate

Things to consider

  • Doesn’t really have a luxury feel to it and looks dated in places
  • Steep walk uphill to get to Valletta’s City Gate (or 15 min walk to get to the back of the city)
  • Restaurants get mixed reviews (but thankfully there’s plenty of choice in Valletta itself).

Hotel impression

  • Overall: Recent renovation has restored the shine to this icon among luxury hotels in Malta
  • Standout strengths: Classical luxury hotel quality, excellent location, gets the details right as well.
  • Location: On the doorstep of Valletta with harbour views and surrounding gardens.

Things to consider

  • Post-renovation rates can get a little ridiculous depending on demand
  • Refreshed interiors may not be to everyone’s taste.

Casa Ellul

Location: Valletta

Casa Ellul

Location: Valletta

Hotel impression

  • Overall: Don’t be fooled by the 4-star rating: If you’re looking for luxury, Casa Ellul should be on your shortlist. The missing star indicates lack of facilities you’d otherwise get at a 5-star property.
  • Standout strengths: Exclusive small boutique hotel, personal service.
  • Location: In the heart of Valletta – One of the few true luxury hotels within the capital city.

Things to consider

  • Choice of suites: The suites have very individual characters so ask for info on and book a specific suite in advance.
  • Not an option for families, but a great option for couples.
  • Doesn’t offer facilities like pools and spas.

Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands

Location: Golden Bay

Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands

Location: Golden Bay

Hotel impression

  • Overall: High standard of accommodation and perfect place to unwind close to the sea
  • Standout strengths: Location and facilities
  • Location: Sitting at the edge of Golden Bay, one of the most beautiful sandy beaches that Malta has to offer.

Things to consider

  • Remote location: Very little around so unless you’re looking for a resort-type of all-inclusive stay you’ll want to rent a car to get around. Bus stops nearby but transit times can be lengthy.
  • They’re big on timeshare sales – expect to get bugged

The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux

Location: Mdina

The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux

Location: Mdina

Hotel impression

  • Overall: Historical gem of a hotel with unique location and classical interiors.
  • Standout strengths: Location, staff and large comfortable rooms.
  • Location: In the heart of Mdina, housed in one of its centuries-old buildings and one of the quaintest areas that Malta has to offer.

Things to consider

  • If you’re looking for perfection, this may not be the hotel for you. Old buildings have their quirks.
  • Very quiet location. Too quiet for some.
  • Most of the value comes from its location, not necessarily the facilities or service.
  • Suitable for couples, not for families with children.

Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz

Location: San Lawrenz, Gozo

Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz

Location: San Lawrenz, Gozo

Hotel impression

  • Overall: The logical choice if you’re looking to stay in Gozo and you’re not on a budget. Only 5-star hotel around on the island.
  • Standout strengths: Great place to unwind, peaceful
  • Location: On the West side of Gozo. A little remote from centre, but distances are short on this small island.

Things to consider

  • Dated in places and rooms in need of refurbishment, which means value isn’t always there. Premium rates are charged for location (and lack of competition in this segment of hotels).
  • Car hire recommended: Public transport isn’t the best way to get around in Gozo, more so with the Kempinski’s remote location.
