The Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta is located just outside capital city Valletta, with a wide open view out over Grand Harbour.
Although Valletta itself offers a variety of smaller boutique hotels, Grand Hotel Excelsior is one of few options in the area that offers 5-Star amenities and is a good option for families and couples.
Valletta’s City Gate can be reached on foot in under 10 minutes and if you continue walking downhill you can get to the centre and back of Valletta easily as well. While the hotel’s restaurants serve quality meals, having easy access to a wide variety of restaurants in the city is a big plus.
With a stately interior and decor, Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta does its utmost to present itself up to 5-star standard. While most rooms, amenities and staff meet that standard, parts of the hotel are a little dated and in need of refurbishment.
Their main competitor in the area, Hotel Phoenicia, offers a much more modern 5-star option, although expect rates to match as a result of their recent revamp.
Having said that, if you book well in advance, Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta still offers good value for money where lower rates offer a high standard of accommodation.
The hotel’s amenities themselves are aplenty, with large pools inside and out
Room tip: For the best views and a quieter stay ask for a room on one of the upper floors. Sea view rooms obviously come at a premium, but does really add to your stay if you enjoy a nice view. Note that a few rooms on the top floor show you a view of parts of the roof of the hotel so mention that in your request to avoid that eye sore.
There is a Tiki bar around the pool area where you can get drinks and finger food.
Hotel staff was friendly and helpful in providing directions and local recommendations.
The hotel is excellent, generous bedrooms, good restaurant with breakfast and dinner buffets.
But the best bit is its location, just 5 minutes walk to the entrance of Valletta.
The Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta is in a great location being within 10 minutes walk of the City Gate into Valetta. It is rated five star, but I would rate is 4+ as some of the decor and fittings are a bit tired.
