Home » Valletta - Malta's capital city » Where is Valletta?
Valletta is located along the northern coastline of Malta and is surrounded by two large natural harbours (Marsamxett Harbour and Grand Harbour).
Valletta is the capital city of the country Malta, which is located in the Mediterranean and forms part of Europe (and a member state of the European Union).
The capital city was built in 1566 by the Knights of Malta and designed to ward off attacks from sea and from land through an intricately and expertly designed plan of state-of-the-art fortifications.
Malta had barely survived a siege from the armies of the Ottoman Empire in the Great Siege of Malta in 1566 and the location of Valletta was strategically chosen to be a more effective defensive position against future attacks.
Recognising the importance to the Catholic religion, the Knights Hospitaller received monetary support from the Vatican and from Spain to build a stronghold in Malta.
The city was named after the then Grandmaster of the Knights, Jean Parisot de la Valette, who led the defence during the Great Siege and who laid the foundation stone to the city on the 28th of March, 1566.
Valletta is an absolutely unique place to visit and is without a doubt worth visiting if you’re looking for a potential travel destination.
